Strengthening Writing in K-8

The Problem

NCCS was adopting HQIM in core subjects like reading and math, but performance in writing had stagnated or even declined due to inconsistent and low-caliber curriculum produced in-house.

The Solution

Over the course of two years, I led the design, execution, and evaluation of a K-8 writing curriculum using the Hochman Method from the Writing Revolution, including project management, direct authorship, and coaching and feedback to curriculum writers and teachers.

The Impact

Writing proficiency skyrocketed, and by 8th grade, 79% of students were scoring proficient on state exams, the highest data point in any grade or subject.

In every grade in 3rd to 8th grade, NCCS outperformed the district and the state on both written expression and conventions.
